Martial arts is a complex subject and there are many different martial arts. This article is about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling.
Grappling is used in martial arts as a term for ground fighting. Grappling has established itself as a martial art in its own right since 1995. That year NAGA (“The North American Grappling Association”) was founded and in 2008 the first Grappling World Championships were held. The aim of this sport is to force the opponent to give up, also known as tapping. You have to put your opponent in an unfavorable position and fix him. The techniques that you can use are levers or chokes. In a fight you have to throw your opponent off balance in order to be able to better control and fix him on the ground. However, grappling is not primarily about strength, but about technique and strategy.
Now to the grappling training: In this type of sport, the entire body is included. In a fight, changing between holds and quickly applied techniques is very strenuous and requires stamina. Therefore, in addition to improving technique, a lot of value is placed on endurance training. In addition, the body must be permanently under tension, otherwise the opponent is being offered a major weak point. Thus, the muscles must be strengthened through strength training. Because kicking and hitting is forbidden, the risk of injury from grappling is limited. For additional security, you agree on a tapping signal with your training partner as an emergency signal.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a modification of traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and has existed for around 100 years. Thereby It is also a form of ground combat. Many elements of this martial art are popular with both MMA fighters and security forces. Punches and kicks are also not allowed in this ground fight. Instead, you use grabs and throws. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often practiced with a traditional suit, the so-called Gi. In addition, there are belts that indicate the combatant's experience. This martial art also begins standing up, but is then mostly finished on the ground. The fights are decided by a points system. You have two ways to win the fight. A fight lasts five to ten minutes. During this time, each fighter gets points for certain techniques and actions. If a fighter forces his opponent to submit, he has won. If no fighter has been able to force their opponent to submit after the time has elapsed, the fighter with the higher score wins. Here, too, the training should be a healthy mixture of technique, endurance and strength training, since the right combination of these skills makes a good fighter.
Finally, the difference between Gi and No-Gi Grappling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. When fighting with Gi, special techniques can be used that are only possible with a Gi. For example a throw where you hold the opponent by the collar of the gi. Shorts and compression shirts are worn in the no-gi fight. Here, too, there are techniques that can only be used with this clothing.
The two martial arts are very similar in terms of allowed techniques and the fight itself. The determination of the winner in competitions, on the other hand, differs due to the point system in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
